We make old stories new.

Animal Engine is the collaboration of theatre artists Carrie Brown and Karim Muasher. Together they create original plays that reimagine works of literature.

“The storytelling is nimble and playful, yet it also has a satisfyingly wide arc. The actors get full marks for sharply and swiftly etching so many characters; every person, animal or thing is crystal clear. This show will be hard to beat for a one-two punch of lightly worn skill and charm.”

Animal Engine Adapting Capital City

After the success of their Willa Cather-inspired epic Henrietta Solway in 2023, Animal Engine has been invited back by the Lied Center of Nebraska and commissioned to create an original play inspired by Nebraska author Mari Sandoz’ Capital City. Set in the Great Depression, the novel describes the goings-on of a fictional Midwestern city with journalistic detail, focusing on the divide between the rich and the poor. What lengths will the have-nots go to gain back their land, homes, and dignity? How far will the haves go to make sure they control it all?

Performed in the company’s signature physical style with just 3 actors, Co-Artistic Directors Carrie Brown and Karim Muasher are joined by collaborator Jay Dunn, who most recently worked with the company on Dearly Departed.

After a 2-week residency at the Lied Center of Nebraska this summer July 22 - August 2, Capital City will premiere at the Lied’s Carson Theater in April 2026 followed by a tour of the state as part of the Lied’s Arts Across Nebraska program.
